Blogging and Christmas cards were removed. We had a lovely Christmas because of this. Mummy’s drill-sergeant-alter-ego was absent so everyone had fun. Most of my Christmas knitting got finished, although I pulled one or two things out of a randomly finished items box. Maybe a little less personal, but the recipients were pleased! Unfortunately, no pictures of anything but Christmas is old news already. I’d rather share pics of what I’ve been working on since Christmas.

Finally finished DH’s socks

And a long-ago request from the lovely Sage is finally finished. She sleeps in it, so I’m guessing she’s a happy customer!

Mum and I are going to tackle some craft sales next winter so I’d like to start stockpiling kids hats, fingerless mitts, socks and neckwarmers. Any other suggestions are very welcome!

New one started for baby brother who better appreciate it, but probably won’t. I like this one better and I’m not lining it because it’ll be too hot in this wool and he really doesn’t need a g-rated side.

Do you swatch for hats? I tend to use the hat as a swatch and then cross my fingers….

I had planned to come to you with an eloquent blog about my Splurge (I will post a pic, I promise – and explain what “splurge” is all about) but it’s not to be. You see, my town and surrounding areas have been hit with a winter storm! Hooray! Buried in snow, finally. I. Love. Winter. (please remind me I said this come Valentine’s Day!) Being that we’ve been a bit storm-and-cold/flu-stayed, I bring you (drum roll please):

Heather’s Fabulous Cure-All and Enjoy Eating Chicken Noodle Soup

This is my very own recipe, tweaked over the years to be extraordinarily un-measured, tasty and guaranteed* to cure the common cold.

Make Stock:

Ingredients:

2 – 3 chicken carcass’ from freezer (these come from those wonderful Sunday dinners. Be lazy and wasteful when you carve your chicken, then throw the whole carcass in a freezer bag and save for a day when you just need to make soup!)

2 – 3 onions, cut in eighths

enough water to cover chicken

3 heaping tbsp’s chopped garlic

2 – 3 bay leaves

2 tbsps Celtic Sea Salt (or salt of your choice, but this one is guilt free!)

Throw all ingredients into large soup pot and boil the sh!t out of it. (this may be why no one’s approached me to write a cookbook!) I usually boil mine for 2 – 3 hours. Strain stock and save the gross chicken parts.

This makes about twice the stock needed for the soup. Throw it in jars and freeze it.

And now, the soup:

2 tbsp olive oil

5 medium carrots, chopped

5 stalks celery, chopped

2 large onions, chopped

1 28 0z can diced tomatoes

1 tbsp parsley

1 tsp thyme

Stock

1 – 2 tbsp chicken bouillon powder (I use Epicure, which is not at all salty. If you’re using something else, you may want to cut this down)

2 cups chicken (from gross chicken parts, trust me) 

2 cups cooked noodles

Salt and Pepper to taste

Sweat onions, celery and carrots in large dutch oven for 1 - 2 minutes, just to bring out flavours. Add spices, heat until fragrant. Pour stock into dutch oven until 3/4 full. Bring to boil. Add tomatoes, heat to boil again. Simmer until carrots are cooked (about 20 minutes). Meanwhile, fish through saved chicken parts for any good meat. This sounds gross but waste not, want not. There is always a lot of meat left over on my chickens and this gets it used. If this is not up your alley, use any other cooked chicken. Add chicken to soup. Salt, pepper and boullion to taste.

Cook noodles separately according to package directions. Serve on the side. This is a large recipe and if there are leftovers, the noodles end up quite unappetizing.

I always add rooster sauce to mine. It adds extra sinus-clearing oomph.

*I didn’t really mean “guarantee”. I just meant there’s lots of garlic in this soup and you’ll feel a bit better after eating it. Sorry if I got you excited about a cure for the common cold. I don’t have one. Hence this disclaimer.

That’s why I’m so very excited to display my successful Poppycock. (There are 2 pans cooling in there) I’m salivating (and also procrastinating cleaning up my kitchen – it’s a bit sticky right now)

Candy – you are no longer my cooking nemesis. What kind of cooking do you steer away from?

I had an incident with the Poppycock last night. There is currently half of an ice-cream pail full of rock hard, burnt candy sitting on my counter. What a depressing waste of time and ingredients. I really need to invest in a candy thermometer. What are they, like 10 bucks? Argggghhh….

The deer hat is almost done. I’ll post pics soon. My camera battery is dead.

My daughter attended her first Remembrance Day Service at school on Wednesday. We asked her what she learned:

“Nothing”.

I asked, “Did you learn why we have Remembrance Day?”

“Because of the war?”

“Yes. What are you supposed to remember?”

“Let me think. Um….The men who died?”

“Yes, anything else?”

“And those who came back?”

“Right.”

“And the nurses, who helped the wounded.”

I think she was listening.

It probably all started to go downhill when I found out I was pregnant with Hagen. I was a little more tired, so let a few more things slide. This has carried on and now he’s almost 7 months and I’ve got kids I hesitate to bring out in public. Today, I stopped raising my voice and became The Enforcer. Any time I had to repeat myself, time out with timers on. Poor kids probably sat in the corner 8 times each today. I think it may have worked, though. By the end of the day, I recognized them as my own again. Dinnertime was fun – we talked and enjoyed each other’s company without having to constantly repeat commands. I’m not naive enough to believe that everyday will go as well as today (yes, I remember, I said 8 time-outs each but it worked the way it’s supposed to) but we’re going to pay attention to consistency as much as possible and go from there!

Because we had such a good day, Sage and I managed to make 2 (count ‘em 2!!) of the Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies. I’m heading off to cut them right now and get them into the freezer before anyone is tempted to eat them.

Christmas Baking: Baking done prior to or during the Christmas season that no one is allowed to touch (or even think about) until a date predetermined by the baker. Touching said baking before the predetermined date will result in a well-deserved hand slap and potential silent treatment. Any attempts to argue with the baker will result in long, drawn out lecture explanation of nice things done for the family by intended recipients. ***Be warned, these explanations are already ready and well-rehearsed***

This is what will be on my baking trays. My goal is to have all baking done by December 1st.

1. 4 9 x 9′s of Cream Cheese Swirl Brownies.

2. 2 9 X 13′s of Pucker-Up Squares. These are great but quite messy on trays and very hard to get out of the pan. I may try lining it with parchment this time. I just like something a bit sour to go with all the crazy sweet stuff.

3. LOTS of Chow Mein Cookies. These are oh so easy to make and everyone’s favourite. Can’t get enough of these puppies. Seriously.

4. 3 9 x 13′s of Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Square. Since I’ll have the butterscotch chips anyways….

5. 2 batches Almond Snowballs. These are absolutely all they’re cracked up to be. The recipe claims to make 42 cookies and, if memory serves, comes quite close. The kids love throwing the chocolate chips in the middle.

6. Sugar cookies and icing for Jac & the kids to decorate Christmas Eve (this doesn’t have to be done by the 1st).

I would also like to make some Poppycock for gifting if I get my nerve up. After the Almond Roca fiasco, anything with a candy thermometer scares me a tad. I have a fabulous recipe though (sworn to secrecy on this one) and advice will be available via telephone so I may just do it.

This list did not make me feel much better. Not at all, really but at least I’ve got it written down?

I’m coming clean with my Christmas knitting aspirations:

1. Plain socks for Grandpa on the farm. Size 13 feet – must start soon.

2. Something thick and quick for 3 girlfriends. (I already know what this will be, just keeping it a secret)

3. Cowls for Grandmas (haven’t picked pattern yet, recommendations welcome!)

4. Teaset for Sage

5. Fornicating deer hat for brother’s 30th birthday (December 1st)

6. 3 pairs felted mitts as “just in case” gifts.

Is this doable? Let’s have a gander at what’s on the needles right now:

1. Shawlette. This is for me. It’s to match a toque I made for myself as a splurge gift. It will be my winter scarf. It’s November 7th. I live in Manitoba. For some reason, we’ve got a high of 17 C (62 F) today. This will not last. I’m going to need that scarf soon.

2. Hat for girlfriend’s birthday. Her birthday was September 2nd and, yes, I am ashamed. I had something else started, realized it was going to be too small and ripped it out. I then promptly started my splurge hat (it’s really cute – I’ll post soon). I also got a little caught up with those booties.

3. Husband socks. Poor, poor husband. He works outside a lot and only has one pair of wool socks. He needs socks from his dear wife who always puts him last. I’m sorry honey. You really should have worn that toque more last winter. Apparently, my knitting holds a grudge. Anyways, I’ll be at a dance thing with Sage (and without boys) all afternoon. His socks are going to be worked on today.

4. Fornicating deer hat for Cam. I was pretty proud to have gotten this bad boy started. So proud, in fact, that I ignored how dangerously small it was until I was over halfway done the lining. I slipped it onto some thread last night and had to face reality. I ripped it out and started again this morning. 3 rows done now so it’s a little bit less done than in the picture. Thankfully, it moves pretty quickly.

It actually doesn’t seem that bad now that I’ve put it into list form (insert crazy, nervous laugh here). I’ve saved myself in a big way this year by discovering a lady closeby who sells the most adorable little matching aprons and oven mitts for kids. All the children 5 and under on my list will be getting them this year. Thank you Dora Something in Onanole. You saved Christmas for my family. (P.S. Dora Something in Onanole? Do you bake? If you could handle the Christmas baking, too – maybe I’ll knit you some socks.)

Both of my grandmothers knit, so I learned from both of them over the years. I think I made a Barbie scarf when I was six. My paternal grandmother, Grandma Betty, used to be disgusted with the way I held my needles. To the point of slapping my hands! I do admit that I had a tendency to kind of claw the needles as though I had meat hooks for hands. This disgust continued through my twenties when I finally went to her for my purl lesson (yes, it took that long).

A friend of mine from work, Michael, mentioned that he’d always wanted to learn how to knit. I told him I could knit and he asked if I would show him. “No”, I said, “but Grandma Betty can!” Poor Grandma Betty. I gave her no warning. I just told her a friend was coming and we wanted a lesson. She spent the entire lesson trying to boost Michael’s knitting self-esteem by telling him, “lots of men knit during the war, so it’s really not that unusual”. She also spent a lot of time admiring the way he held his needles and slapping admonishing me for the way I held mine. I think she was quite ashamed that a man could catch on as quickly as that and her poor, pathetic granddaughter would just never get it! (She never once mentioned my lovely tension, just the meathooks).

Well, Grandma…you should see me now! I have graduated from scarves and am knitting all kinds of things. Socks, hats, mittens, colourwork, lace – you name it, I’ll try it. Although, when I go to my knitting group, I find myself embarrassed about the way I’m pawing on the needles. One day I had a band-aid on the end of one of my fingers and it was really slowing me down so I decided to take care of this little problem by finally forcing myself to hold my needles “properly”. For whatever reason, the only way I felt comfortable was by going “continental”. I never thought I’d be that type of girl but I am and I’m proud. It’s made everything easier and faster (especially colourwork). It’s really changed the way I feel about knitting (and I loved it to begin with). It may have even reduced my risk of getting carpal tunnel. Who knew switching over from the right to the left would be such a breakthrough. I’m telling everyone I know and, really only getting blank stares back. Stares that say, “I’m going to listen politely but I’m really not sure why this girl is telling me this. Oh my, she really seems excited. Should I be this excited for her? I don’t know if I can fake it.” I don’t care. It’s big, big news for me.

Hopefully Grandma’s smiling down on my hands but I have a feeling her thoughts will be more along the lines of, “Continental? But that’s how Myrtle Witherspoon used to knit. I can’t have my granddaughter knitting like Myrtle Witherspoon, I never really warmed up to that woman”
